Sydney Metro dumped in new transport masterplan
The New South Wales Government revealed a new transport vision for Sydney in late February, shelving the 7km AUD5bn CBD Metro project in favour of expanded light and heavy rail links to the city's suburbs.
Following a specially convened cabinet meeting on Sunday 21 February, Premier Kristina Keneally announced the AUD50.2bn Metropolitan Transport Plan: Connecting the Centre of Cities, which officially cancels the CBD Metro project.
The new 10-year masterplan focuses mostly on Sydney's western suburbs and includes USD3.1bn for new trains, USD2.9bn for new buses, AUD225 for six new ferries and AUD500m to expand the current light rail system through the inner west, almost doubling its length and adding up to 20 new stops.
